Prescribed Burn
A controlled fire intentionally ignited by land managers and firefighting professionals to manage vegetation, reduce the accumulation of combustible materials, and minimize the risk of larger, more destructive wildfires. Also known as controlled burns or prescribed fires, these burns are carefully planned and conducted under specific weather conditions and with appropriate safety measures in place to ensure they remain under control. Prescribed burns can also promote ecological diversity and improve wildlife habitats. In legal disputes related to wildfires, such as the Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak Fire, questions may arise about the use and effectiveness of prescribed burns, the responsibility of various parties in implementing and managing these burns, and the potential role of prescribed burns in preventing or contributing to wildfire events.
